In his new song ‘Doori’ from the movie ‘Gully Boy’, Ranveer Singh is highlighting many burning issues that are plaguing the society and impacting lives. The song is highlighting problems at different levels, those caused by society and those caused by family. It is about a poor man, caught in the chase of earning a living and the problems he faces in society. The intensity with which the song has been sung makes you stop and think for a while, are we living on a volcano? It is about the general suffering of someone coming from a poor background. The song has been presented with reference to ironies.
It talks about social divisions. It shows many contrasts. It says the world is divided into two. One is bright, the other is dark. The bright world belongs to the rich, the dark world belongs to the poor. These two worlds are close to each other, yet they are so far. As highlighted by the lines ‘ab dekho toh hum paas hain lekin, socho kitni doori hai’. What is this ‘Doori’? The rich live in high rise buildings, but poor live nearby on pavements. This contrast has a lot of meaning for the poor man. He feels, that he could be helped by the rich, but is not. He wants to find a way to cover up this gap, but does not know how to do it.
The song highlights a general trend of the world. Wherein, people are running after materialistic possessions. It is not wrong to do that, but the point is about getting so lost in them, that you miss what is around you. The reference to the words of ‘chela’, show that real work, or authentic work is not important, but rather ‘pleasing the egos’ of those powerful is important. ‘Seena Zori’, the trend now-a-days is to show off how much money you have, how much power you have. It is an indication towards a fakeness. What will a poor man, who wants to be recognised for his talents, do in this world. If he does not have the means to.
Another irony highlighted in this song is that the rich too have their miseries. A person, who after running behind materialistic possessions, finds himself alone in his ‘moti-mahal’.
When the world is in a chase, the family too gets caught up in that chase. The lines ‘Ghar pe sabke aapne aapne gum hai, Diwaare jyada aur bole, Kamre yahan kam hai’ signify this. The father has the pressure of earning money for his family. The mother has to maintain the household. Behind all this work, there are their own desires which have been succumbed or buried under the ‘responsibilities’ of life. The daughter may find it hard to ‘fit-in’ this world, fitting into her social circle. The son may find it difficult to become a rockstar that he always wanted to be, he may not be getting the marks demanded by his father, he is bullied at school. The family brings all these problems at home. House is the place where we can be open to each other. But at home, when we bring these frustrations to each other, we also blame each other. We set up walls against each other when we refuse to understand one another.
‘Meri maa bas roti..’ The mother cries because of the chaos inside house and outside. She does not know how her son will survive in this world, which is very unfair, in a haze and complex. How will she protect him or help him fulfil his dreams. How will he earn a living. She fears that he will get lost in this world. This shows the helplessness and hopelessness of a mother. It shows that she is unsure if her son will live a fulfilling life. How will her son make a life in this whirlpool. The line hints at doused hopes and presence of fear.
In the end, the song talks about an ‘anhoni’…
What is this ‘anhoni’? Is there a bubble that is going to burst? Ranveer Singh’s urgency indicates towards the pain and desperation of the desolate. He is talking from the angst of those who are suffering. He could enter the domain of hopelessness where he feels that his dreams have no future. His talents won’t be recognised. He does not want to enter the chase of money, or get money through wrong means. The anhoni is the retaliation or the rebels who would develop to rise against the system.
The song rightly asks that why the distance ‘doori’ between the rich and poor exists. Can we be of help to each other? Can we develop meaningful relationships by noticing those around us. If we are not blinded by the chase to get richer and more powerful. Can we create a better system? The song implies that most of our miseries are self created. What is the point of these miseries when even after so much running around we are not happy. As correctly questioned by Ranveer Singh, ‘Kaisi ye majboori hai?’.
