BJP’s campaign of ‘Main bhi chowkidar’ has something wrong about it. There is a factor that is very unattractive. When I pondered over it, I realised that it was the vision projected by the term ‘chowkidar’. Why does the PM want to be a chowkidar rather than a leader? A chowkidar is a defensive term. He is a protector on whose basis people can safely live in their homes without any worry. It is right for a PM to protect his country, at whose cost, his country men will relax and go about doing their daily chores. But is that what a PM is limited to?
India is a developing country. It has to grow in many aspects such as economically, job growth, development of poorer sections of society etc.. Will all this a chowkidar do?
A country sees a leader in it’s PM. With the development Mr. Modi had done in Gujarat, people got hope that he will be the one to take india ‘forward’. That he would make the effort to develop the country same way as he did in Gujarat. They saw a ‘leader’ who would take them out of their mess and give them a better future. Can a chowkidar do that? A chowkidar protects the bungalow or the colony he is hired to protect. Mr. Modi kept a strong foot by responding to the Pulwama attack. The country felt safe that we are in right hands and any terrorist activity would be responded to strongly. But there are other issues that require development such as more job creation, the SME need to get stabilised after the demonetisation, which will create more jobs etc.
Singapore’s ex PM Mr. Lee Kuan Yew is touted as a visionary who strategised and made strong policies for Singapore’s development. He was a logic driven man, who responded through sensible actions He also managed to earn the trust of his country men and showed them the road to development. BJP should look into the the message that it is putting forward through this campaign slogan. A vision of chowkidar is rather demotivating and lacks the spirit. It should check if the people are convinced, motivated, attracted or demotivated by it?The youth and the people want someone they can look upto, who will definitely protect them but also show them the way. The slogan should match with the image of Mr. Modi who is seen as a strong leader rather than a chowkidar.
